The Institute has made very substantial progress since we published our first development strategy in 2001. The purpose of this new document is to refine and update both our strategy and our more detailed plans to ensure that we build on our existing achievements and secure even greater successes over the next five years and beyond.
The next few years will be a critically important period for the Institute’s development. Both the accountancy profession and the public services face the certainty of major change. The challenge for CIPFA is to be at the heart of the action in an influential position to help shape events proactively.
In developing the new strategy outlined here the CIPFA Council recognises the fundamental importance of the Institute’s relationship with members and students. We need to engage as effectively as possible with them. We need to invest even more energy and resources in their development and we need to capture and utilise more of their knowledge and expertise so that best practice can be identified more systematically and promoted more widely.
The Council has also recognised the need to think long term about the Institute’s future membership base and the changing shape of the profession and the public services. With these factors in mind the strategy includes a much stronger focus on international activities. By 2010 we plan to occupy a pre-eminent position on the world stage as the leading institute on public finance and accountancy.
We are grateful to the wide range of members and students who have contributed
views and ideas to the process of reviewing our strategy. And as ever we are
interested to receive further views, reactions and advice at any time.
