The local highway network and other local transport infrastructure assets represent the biggest capital asset that the UK public sector holds. It is vital to national economic prosperity. Yet few authorities know what their infrastructure is worth, what it consists of, and the condition it is in – information that is essential if they want to drive down the cost base and improve service delivery.
The new Code of Practice on Transport Infrastructure Assets from CIPFA will help authorities tackle these problems with an asset management plan (AMP) approach to the provision of financial information about local authority transport infrastructure assets.
Implementing an infrastructure asset management approach has been shown to. deliver significant value for money savings and service benefits.
