Facing the cuts

Spending cuts and a wave of public service reform are creating new challenges for the professionals managing public money and public services.

Through our range of support services, CIPFA aims to provide leaders across the public sector with the strategic insight and the financial skills they need to manage the cuts as successfully as possible for their organisations and for the communities they serve.

Rebalancing the public finances: the end of the beginning follows on from last year's After the Downturn report. It assesses the coalition Government's first months of managing the spending cuts and explores the key risks in the coming months as spending cuts are felt across the country.

After the Manifesto: delivering the plan sets out the actions we believe the Government needs to take to build an effective strategy for restoring order and balance to public finances. Following on from last year's CIPFA Manifesto, it argues the coalition Government must deliver a complete picture of its plans to fully inform debate within Parliament, the public and the markets.

Leading in Hard Times provides those in leadership positions with a framework for approaching the challenging years ahead. Tailored explicitly for the difficult conditions which are likely to prevail for the next few years, the report aims to help leaders form a clear picture of the journey their organisation needs to travel and the nature of the services that will emerge when a ‘post-rebalancing’ destination is reached.

After the downturn - managing significant and sustained adjustment in public sector funding is CIPFA's contribution to the spending cuts debate. The report, first published in December 2009, explored the impact of cuts at different levels and set out the options available to the Government and public bodies. CIPFA and Solace are building on this report and will publish more work in this series later in 2010.
