Honours List

Brian Dinsdale, the chief executive of Hartlepool Borough Council, was awarded an OBE in the New Year's Honours List for services to regeneration.

Brian is involved in two multi-million pound single regeneration budget projects, as well as the New Deal for Communities initiative.

He has also been involved in Hartlepool's City Challenge programme and the development of Hartlepool marina.

His career in local government has included finance posts with North Riding of Yorkshire County Council, the Lindsay and Holland County Councils in Lincolnshire and Humberside County Council. Before working for Hartlepool, he had been assistant treasurer at Cleveland County Council.

Brian said: `I am absolutely delighted. This honour is recognition of all the work done by a great many people in Hartlepool to turn around the fortunes of the town.'


Hilary Ross, who introduced two new tax systems and a new benefits system at Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, was awarded an MBE for services to local government in the New Year's Honours list.

Mrs Ross, 63, joined the council as a mature graduate in 1977, and became assistant director (exchequer services) in 1986. For eight months last year she also was acting assistant director (information services).

Mrs Ross managed 180 staff at the time of her retirement last autumn.

Council executive leader, Councillor Fred Ridley, said: `Our warmest congratulations to Hilary on this well-deserved honour'.

The award came as a surprise to Mrs Ross. She says that when she received notification of the award: `I had to read the letter two or three times before I decided it was genuine!'

Now she plans to enjoy her retirement by seeing more of her family and friends. She also intends do a little travelling in Europe. So she is brushing up her Spanish…
