Lambeth council's finance department has been awarded CIPFA's prestigious Best Employer accreditation award. Lambeth is the only London borough granted the award this year.

The scheme acts as a means of recognising good practice among employers in the use of innovative training, and in particular in work with graduate trainees.

The finance department was also recognised for its participation in a London-targeted recruitment drive.

This collaborative initiative with CIPFA and other London boroughs has been designed to recruit and develop finance professionals through a structured trainee programme.

The project aims to raise the profile of finance careers within local government and to tackle the under-representation of ethnic minorities in the local government finance sector.

The council's success was acknowledged by a CIPFA presentation to Lambeth chief executive Faith Boardman.

Tribute was paid to the dedication and commitment of director of finance Richard Ennis, assistant director of finance Gordon Fryer and senior human resources manager Georgia Nicolaou.

'This award recognises the effort and hard work put in by our learning and development staff in finance,' said Councillor Ashley Lumsden, Lambeth's executive member for finance. 'We hope to see examples such as this of a continuous drive for improvement and best practice reflected across the council.'
