CIPFA Council, the Institute's governing body, has agreed to
recommend mandatory CPD for all working CIPFA members. The
recommendation will be the subject of a full postal ballot of
all members culminating in a decision at the Annual General
Meeting in Harrogate on 12 June 2003.

CIPFA's Council has approved the 2002 results
showing a financial surplus of £428,000 and a turnover
of £32,776,000, a growth of 13% in the year.
The financial results reflect the continued success of recruitment
to the education and training scheme. Last year saw 867 student
registrations, a 12% growth on 2001 and the highest annual
registrations for a decade.

The Home Group, the second largest housing association group in
the UK, is looking for a new volunteer Board Member who will
also chair its Group Audit Committee. The Group Board meets
four or five times a year; the Audit Committee normally meets
three times. All meetings are held in the Newcastle-upon-Tyne
area.

39 members are standing for election for 21 seats on the 2003/04
Institute Council. Members should by now have received a copy
of the election manifesto booklet and ballot paper. Close
of poll is Friday May 9, and all members are encouraged to
take this chance to influence the composition of the Institute
Council.

Leaders in Finance is a new residential development programme
for Directors of Finance and senior finance staff in the public
services. Jointly developed by CIPFA and the Warwick Institute
of Governance and Public Management, its distinctive themes
are Leadership and Excellence with a special emphasis on Delivery.
The programme is carefully tailored to help senior finance
staff to rise to the modernisation challenge.

A new website aimed at CIPFA volunteers is currently being developed
and will be launched in the coming weeks. The website will
include information about the different types of volunteering
opportunities available, the benefits of volunteering, and

copies of the CIPFA Volunteer Brochure and the new Volunteer
Information Pack.

The Public Finance Public Servants of the Year
Awards seek to recognise the achievements of individuals working
across the public services.
The shortlist of finalists has been announced and comprises
a range of professional backgrounds, including: doctors; a nurse;
teachers; a cleaning supervisor; an orthotist and a library
assistant.

The CIPFA 2003 Conference & Exhibition takes place in Harrogate

A series of student workshops will take place
in April and May, in preparation for the June 2003 exams. There
is a high level of demand for these workshops, so students are
advised to book early. The sessions will take place in London
and Birmingham, and cover a range of subjects from P1 to P3.
