Welcome to the 2nd issue of the Public Servants of the Year Awards
e-newsletter. This has been a busy month and we have some excellent
news for you, so please read on…
New Award Announcement
Following the Chancellor’s pre-Budget speech on 2 December,
in which he spoke of the Better Regulation and Deregulation Agenda,
we are delighted to announce the launch of a new award: Creative
Solutions - the award for better regulation,
this has been developed in partnership with the Cabinet Office Regulatory
Impact Unit.
This award is for individuals or teams who have devised effective,
customer-focused ways of meeting policy objectives without regulation.
It is also open to those who have delivered reform, for example
by modernising processes or legislation, which has led to deregulation
– that is the removal or reduction of regulatory burdens or
unnecessary bureaucracy for business, front line staff or the public.
The deadline for nominations for this new category is 31 December
2004. For further information contact Helen McDonnell on 020 7543
5872 or email publicservants@publicfinance.co.uk
Further information and an online booking form are available at

Record Number of Entries
Thank you to everyone who sent in a nomination. The stories behind
every entry are an inspiration and we are delighted to have received
a record number of entries. This phenomenal response demonstrates
how highly respected the awards have become and ensures the fifth
ceremony will be another incredible celebration of achievements.
The massive task of sorting and logging all of the entries is now
complete and they are on their way to our team of scrutineers. Every
entry is marked by two scrutineers against a consistent marking
scheme. Marks are then compared and moderated by Brian Smith, a
former President of CIPFA, resulting in a long-list of entries going
forward to our eminent panel of judges who select the finalists
and eventually the winners. All finalists will be announced in March
and the winners announced at a glittering ceremony in April.
Volunteers Found
Our call for scrutineers resulted in a significant number of volunteers
willing to forgo some of their Christmas leave to read and mark
the high number of entries. We are especially grateful to these
“foot soldiers” for their considerable contribution
to the success of the event and wish to say a big thank you to everyone
who responded to our appeal.
