Public Servants of the Year Awards
2004 Award Winners

Happy New Year and welcome to the third e-newsletter for the Public Servants of the Year Awards 2005. This monthly bulletin provides you with updates on what is happening with the awards including promotion, judging the entries and the ceremony in April.

Creative Solutions

Following the Chancellor's Pre-Budget Speech we launched a new category, ‘Creative Solutions – the award for better regulation’, with an extended deadline of the 31st December 2004. Despite the late announcement of the category and the short deadline, that coincided with the Christmas holidays, we have had an excellent response with many outstanding entries. The scrutineers have now returned their marks for all entries and Project Advisor, Brian Smith, has moderated those awarded for each. As always the scrutineers did a sterling job against tight deadlines and for this we would like to say a very BIG thank you.

Judges

Having been a judge for the Public Servants of the Year Awards since 2002 we are sad to have to say goodbye to Sir John Stevens QPM. As was recently reported, Sir John is retiring as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police at the end of January. Sir John was keen to continue his personal association with the awards, however as he is taking a much-deserved break in February he will be unable to participate in the judging process. We are very grateful for Sir John’s valuable input over the last three years and wish him well in his retirement.

Succeeding Sir John on the judging panel, we are delighted to welcome Chris Fox, President of the Association of Chief Police Officers.

Chris FoxChris joined Nottinghamshire Police, in 1972, as a graduate entrant, serving in various roles such as City Divisional Command, CID, Special Operations and Community Affairs. In 1991, he joined Warwickshire Constabulary as Assistant Chief Constable (Operations and Crime), becoming Deputy Chief Constable in 1994. After acting as Chief Constable in Warwickshire, he was appointed Chief Constable of Northamptonshire Police in 1996.

Chris is the first full time President of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO). He has represented the service on matters as diverse as finance, the national communications system, police reform and general policing.

The other members of the judging panel are:

  • Prof. Sir Michael Lyons
Director, INLOGOV and Deputy Chairman, Audit Commission
  • Sir Michael Bichard
