| Public Servants of
the Year Awards 2004
Happy New Year and welcome to the third e-newsletter
for the Public Servants of the Year awards 2004. This monthly bulletin
provides you with updates on what is happening with the awards from
promotion to judging the entries and the ceremony in May 2004.
These prestigious awards, run by Public
Finance magazine in partnership with the Chartered Institute
of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA),
the Cabinet Office
and the Office of Government Commerce,
seek to recognise and reward excellence and outstanding achievement
displayed by individuals and teams from Britain's 4 million public
sector workers.
IN AND COUNTING
First of all a BIG thank you if you sent in your nomination
for this year’s Public Servants of the Year awards. The office
was swamped with award nominations on the 7 December 2003 deadline,
proving that not even a postal strike - which plagued most of London
in mid-November - would disrupt entries getting in!
The entries are now in their first stage of the evaluation process
and are with our team of scrutineers who are busy assessing and
marking them against a consistent marking scheme. Every entry is
seen by two scrutineers and the marks awarded are then moderated
by Brian Smith, the Project Advisor and a former President of Chartered
Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy. This process produces
the long-list of entries, which are then marked by the panel of
judges in February. Finalists for the seven individual and six team
awards are announced in March and all finalists receive an invitation
to the awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on
10 May.
A DAME AMONG THE JUDGES
 |
A former chair of the awards judging
panel, Rabbi Julia Neuberger, was created a dame commander of
the Order of the British Empire in the New Year’s honours
list. Dame Julia, also a member of the Committee of Standards
in Public Life, is a leading figure in health service thinking.
She joined the King’s Fund Institute in 1989, becoming
the campaigning charity’s chief executive in 1998.
