Have Your Say on The CIPFA Conference

The CIPFA conference in 2008 will take place at the Brighton Metropole Hotel from June 18-19.

During this year’s event we researched the views of delegates, visitors and exhibitors so we can make our future events as relevant and timely as possible. Following on from that feedback, a group of council members is now reviewing the format, date and content of future annual conferences and responding to the issues raised. Essential future venue bookings necessitate that the 2008 event will again be in June but we are keen to hear your views about the timing of the conference beyond 2008 as well as suggestions for the content, theme and structure of next year’s conference. Please email your comments to sheila.fenton@cipfa.org by Friday 17th September.

In the meantime, you can book your accommodation in Brighton now at https://www.conferencebookings.co.uk/delegate/BTNCIPFA2008

Public Money & Management Public Sector Consulting

CIPFA’s journal, Public Money & Management, will publish a collection of articles on academic advice to practitioners in its September 2007 issue (volume 27, number 4). The journal is developing fast with its academic rating continuing to increase and practitioners definitely taking note of and using its articles. As a result, CIPFA has decided to further increase its pages and frequency in 2008.

There is a special rate for CIPFA members: see www.cipfa.org.uk/pt/pmm/subscriptions.cfm or email the managing editor, Michaela Lavender, at micky@mickylavender.com.

Council Managers Cautious of Consultants, Survey Shows

The overall opinion of council bosses towards management consultants is one of ‘general suspicion’, a survey by a team of academics reveals. Publishing their findings in the latest issue of Public Money & Management, the team from the University of Birmingham claim that council managers feel uncertain about the value for money offered by consultants. There is also doubt over the abilities of consultants to make organisational change happen.
