The CIPFA Education & Training Centre (CETC) has added a new course to its schedule of professional qualification courses. The bespoke course has been tailored to the needs of external audit firms who required a solution to the problem of their trainees taking study leave and sitting exams in June – the busiest time of the year for the firms.
The solution is a three-year programme that revolves around the December exam sitting with students starting courses each year in February and studying throughout the year. Gary Gilbert, Head of CETC explains more: “The trainees sat two modules last December; they will study four modules this year followed by five modules in 2009. The programme will be completed with the modules for the Final Test of Professional Competence in June 2010, the only occasion when exams will be sat at that time. The course will be taught on a block release basis throughout the year with an intensive revision period before the December exams. This course is completely different from any of the others that CETC offers and we’re sure that it will alleviate the problems firms faced whilst still enabling students to pass in the same time frame.”
The course starts at CETC South East on February 25. For more information call 0207 403 4300 or email enquiries@cetc,org.uk.

PUBLIC MANAGEMENT AND POLICY ASSOCIATION NEWS |
Nick Clegg MP, Leader of the Liberal Democrats began this series with his “Beyond liberty” Event (28th January 2008):
2008 could be a momentous year for the Liberal Democrats. In Nick Clegg they have a new leader who has committed to reaching out beyond the two-party system and reinvigorating liberal values. Some of the priorities are clear already – concentrating on bread and butter issues like support for families and tackling the inequalities in modern society. In particular, Clegg has focused on the importance of opportunity and social mobility, and has spoken about ensuring that these aims are pursued through the education system.
But does this form the basis of a distinctively liberal agenda? Is there a place for a liberal approach in the 21st century? And what is the contribution of liberalism to a modern, vibrant democracy?
