This event will be of particular interest to council
leaders and finance portfolio holders; chief executives; treasurers
and directors of finance; and senior local government finance
team members in all English local authorities. Topics for discussion
will include the Review Group and its progress; options for
major change, including adjusting Council Tax, the National
Non-Domestic Rate and Local Income Tax; and alternative and
multiple sources of funding. We anticipate an audience of 100+.

This day is aimed at all NHS
finance team members from all organisations. It will include
sessions on how to ensure an improved financial position in
the new year; the Audit Commission’s approach to achieving
first-class financial management in the NHS; the role of strategic
health authorities in financial recovery planning and two
practical case studies. We anticipate between 100 and 150
senior finance staff from all areas of the health service.

Capital Finance and the Treasury Management Code of Practice

This course enables those new to the sector to
gain greater confidence in their grasp of the current regime
in police finance and provides a sound knowledge base from which
to move ahead. Sessions to be covered will include: the structure
of police finance; the role of the Home Office; the role of
the Police Authority; audit and inspection issues. It is expected
to attract about 50 relatively junior finance staff. Read

The seminar will be of relevance to all senior
finance team members throughout local government in Wales. It
examines the application of and relationship between two of
CIPFA’s Codes of Practice in Wales: the Prudential Code
and the Code of Practice for Treasury Management. An audience
of 70 is expected.

The Finance Manager and Technology Challenge –

& 30 June 2004 - Birmingham |
| This seminar is intended for directors of finance, finance
managers, service heads, IT managers and audit staff from all
public service sectors in England and Wales. It will examine
the relationship between finance and IT, and how finance managers,
who have IT as part of their remit, manage this area in terms
of fit, strategic positioning and sound project management.
Around 80 senior staff are expected to attend. Read

This is the key event for all audit management
in the public and private sectors and those with an interest
in IT issues affecting audit. It will provide a valuable update
on current IT audit issues, including putting a security policy
together; future challenges from risk management to information
security governance; freedom of information and IT control matrices.

Conference for the Regions
The Conference for the Regions is being held on 8 - 10 September
in Douglas, Isle of Man. The theme of this year's Conference is
'Moving to a Cohesive Institute' and this prestigious event regularly
attracts over 100 high level and influential delegates from across
the UK and the Republic of Ireland. There are a range of sponsorship
opportunities available.

CIPFA in Wales Annual Public Services Finance Conference
Please note that the dates for the CIPFA in Wales Public Services
Finance Conference are now 18 - 19 November 2004 - venue remains
the same.
This two day residential event will take place at the Vale of Glamorgan
Hotel on the 18-19th November 2004. Building on the success of previous
events this conference promises a prestigious line up of invited
speakers to present issues of national and strategic importance
which impact on the Welsh public sector scene. The conference is
aimed at senior public sector managers and decision makers and enables
them to focus on the bigger picture.
To support the event, an exhibition area has been reserved as well
as the opportunity for involvement in workshop sessions, which will
form part of the conference programme. Building upon the success
of the 2003 event the CIPFA in Wales Annual Dinner will remain a
feature of the overall event when a number of distinguished guests
will be invited to join the delegates in celebration of another
successful year.

Public Servants of the Year Awards 2004
Finalists Announced
18 teams and 21 individuals working in the UK’s exceptional
public services have been selected as finalists for the 2004 Public
Servants of the Year Awards organised by Public Finance magazine.
This year’s shortlist of outstanding candidates comprises
a range of professional backgrounds, including: chief executives,
a community warden, environmental and operational maintenance managers,
school teachers, police, non executive directors, local government
workers and individuals working in central government departments.
They also include teams from a job centre, the Crown Prosecution
Service, local authorities, a primary care trust, HM Prisons and
many more.
The final winners and both the Outstanding Public Servant of the
Year and the Public Service Team of the Year will be announced at
a glittering ceremony taking place at the Grosvenor House Hotel,
London on 10 May.
