Dear Student,
Hello, and welcome to the latest NSF newsletter.
The NSF are currently reviewing our objectives for the forthcoming
year and we have a great deal planned. We are going to focus are
efforts on key areas which include, increased support for students
from employers, marketing of the NSF and CIPFA, new membership of
the NSF to take into account all the new qualifications and open
learning students, and increased regional support for students.
These are key areas in which we believe we can make a difference
for students. For further details of our action plan, please visit
the NSF website and have a look at the plan. www.cipfa.org.uk/students/nsf

Key your eyes peeled for further information.

The CIPFA in the Midlands Student society held their first student
event for 2006 on Friday 3rd February at Leicester City Council.
The event was very successful with 26 students attending. Students
arrived at 12:30 to be greeted by a very good buffet lunch, provided
courtesy of Leicester City Council. Proceedings kicked off with
the first of three talks: - International Development and CIPFA
careers abroad; followed by an update on the changes made to the
IPDS; then to finish: A talk on Current and Emerging Issues in the
Public Sector. The feedback forms show that students found it very
useful for their professional development and they look forward
to the next student event.

Having worked in three organisations in three years, I’m
either unafraid of change or scared of commitment!
The reluctance of certain colleagues to accept even the possibility
of challenging, let alone changing, the status quo is a mystery
to me, when I am generally of the opinion that change is good.
A new computer system may seem cumbersome and user-unfriendly in
its youth, but if it can cut those horrific hours of copy and pasting
that I suffered as a lowly trainee accountant and mean that other
graduates can come into the profession with an emphasis on thinking
and strategy rather than data entry and photocopying, all the better!
The “Seen-It-All-Before” brigade, and the “It-Will-All-Change-Again-In-Six-Months”
clan would doubtless obstruct this change, as well as the more serious
changes such as Payment by Results in the NHS, or the new Comprehensive
Performance Assessment in Local Government.
But take change as a game! Yes, there will be winners and losers,
but that’s life. The crucial element of winning in any change
situation may be to understand the driving forces for and against
change and align with and manipulate those driving forces for your
own gain if at all possible. Take that new computer system; if you
can get on well with it while all those about you are losing their
heads in frustration, you’ll be invaluable to the organisation
and show that you react well to change and are steady in new and
potentially stressful situations. Change is inevitable in the public
services and the quicker you can understand and work with the latest
idea produced by the “Think Tanks”, the more you will
benefit both yourself and your organisation.

Is your lecturer Top of the Pops when it comes to teaching?
When you’ve had a bad day, are they your hero?
The award-winning National Student Forum is proud to present the
annual 'Excellence in Education' award to the CIPFA lecturer they
feel has reached the no.1 spot.
More prestigious than the Grammys and cooler than MTV, this is
an opportunity for students to nominate the lecturer who deserves
the honour of a lifetime achievement award and to pay tribute to
the dedication, enthusiasm and commitment that they show to students’
education and training.
Previous winners have included Ian “Do Ya Think I’m
Sexy?” Bowler, Graham “Born to Be Wild” Ball and
George “We Love You Liverpool We Do” Foster.
If you would like to nominate a special lecturer, please send an
e-mail to the National Student Forum at NSF@cipfa.org
by 28th April 2006 with the following information:
- Name and job title of nominee and the college they work at
- Their e-mail address
- Up to one side of A4 explaining how the lecturer meets the
following criteria: teaching excellence; student support (both
tutorial and pastoral); and commitment to the CIPFA course.
The best nomination will win a bottle of bubbly to celebrate like
a real pop star (but don’t go trashing any rooms)!
