CIPFA PAQ Revision Courses Available AT CETC

With CIPFA exams taking place in June 2006 the CIPFA Education and Training Centre (CETC) is offering a programme of exam-focused revision courses aimed at helping students pass their exams.

The courses aren’t just restricted to CETC students and are popular with students studying via other means, especially distance learning. Gary Gilbert, Head of CETC, says: “These courses are a great option for students studying CIPFA through distance learning, they will benefit from being with other students in the same situation and from the contact they will have with our experienced trainers.”

To enrol or find out more visit the CETC website: www.cetc.org.uk, call 020 7403 4300 or email enquiries@cetc.org.uk.

Effective use of the Open Learning Materials

When you first started studying and received a copy of the Open Learning Materials (OLM), did you ever feel overwhelmed?

The Effective use of the Open Learning Materials booklet is the second in the series of booklets that CIPFA is producing to give advice and help to students studying the Professional Accountancy Qualification.

The booklet will introduce you to the main features of the CIPFA OLM covering:

  • How the Open Learning Materials have evolved
  • Study Sessions explained
  • Specimen papers and Question Banks
  • Passcards

The booklet is free and available to students, it is situated on the CIPFA student website within the study lounge, www.cipfa.org.uk/students/studylounge.

Technical review (Certificate Stage) – Financial Management, Systems and Techniques (FMST)

Working Capital Calculations – Interest Savings

As examiner for this subject and for Information and Financial Management (IFM) David Walker has noted with concern recurring problems with some of the calculations required in working capital management. This technical article examines one of these areas of concern and will try to help by breaking the calculations down and explaining the logic behind them.

Ken Gill has left CIPFA

As some of you may have heard, Ken Gill has left CIPFA to take up the post of Strategic Director at the National College for School Leadership. Ken had been Education and Training Director since 1996.

The process for recruiting the new Director is now well underway, with a good range of strong candidates being interviewed over the next couple of weeks. An announcement on the appointment is expected soon. We will, of course, keep you posted.

CIPFA Career Conference, Harrogate – Moving On Up

Newly qualified members along with students are invited to get their careers on track at this year’s CIPFA Career Conference. Taking place in Harrogate on Wednesday 14 June (alongside CIPFA’s renowned Annual Conference) delegates will be motivated by three top speakers at the Moving on Up themed day.

Delegates may just be able to move mountains after hearing from Ian Woodall, one of only a handful of people to successfully climb both the North and South sides of Mount Everest, the world’s biggest mountain. They’ll certainly be striving to be the best after hearing from Saira Khan, star of The Apprentice. Nathan Elvery, who at 36 is the youngest financial director of the London Borough Councils and holds dual membership with CIPFA and the AAT, will provide delegates with an insight on how to get to the very top of the profession.

The day will also include hints and tips for improving interview techniques, ice-breakers, quizzes and much, much more!

For more information on the Career Conference and to book your place, go to the dedicated conference website: www.cipfaconference.org.uk.
