NSF conference to merge with CIPFA Annual Conference 2009

Following a lengthy discussion at the most recent NSF meeting, student representatives decided in principle, to pilot a merge of the NSF conference with the main CIPFA conference in 2009.

There are many benefits to merging the two conferences, and it would offer access to headline speakers at the morning plenary, entrance to the main exhibition and networking opportunities.

The NSF would have a strong prominence at the event with its own dedicated exhibition space. Student focused workshops will also be organised. The NSF welcomes any suggestions from students as to the workshop themes, and any ideas in general regarding merging the conference.

The NSF conference will be held in Manchester on Wednesday 24 June 2009 in the afternoon and will remain FREE to all student delegates who register to attend. Those students who would like to attend the second day of the main conference will be offered discounted rates.

If you have any queries, comments or feedback, please contact Aga Jop or Judith Savage at nsf@cipfa.org

Get involved - become an NSF member!

The NSF is a forum run by students for students and CIPFA aims for it to have a varied membership with student representatives from different backgrounds, regions, levels of study and organisations. To this purpose, we are seeking students to represent:

  • Wales
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Northern Ireland
  • Scotland
  • Certificate level studies

These are not exclusive and we welcome applications from other regions and levels of study as well. Any student who wishes to get involved can approach the NSF to become a member and will be invited to join if certain criteria are fulfilled. This should ensure that the membership provides a fair representation of the CIPFA student body.

Students gain a lot from membership of the NSF as explained by Sean Cosgrove:

“I was attracted by the possibility of contributing something - CIPFA's a much smaller community than, say, the ACCA, which seems to mean people care more - and, at the same time, of the chance to network with my potential future colleagues and employers. I suspect my membership also helps protect me from ‘London-centricity’!”

For further information and application pack, please contact Aga Jop at aga.jop@cipfa.org

CIPFA South East Students' Society

The CIPFA National Student Forum is facilitating the creation of an official CIPFA South East Students’ Society with the intention that a launch event is held in February/March 2009.  The NSF would like to hear from CIPFA Students in the South East who wish to run the society.

If you would like more information or wish to be involved in the running of the society please email Jonathan Causton atjcauston@rushcliffe.gov.uk

Scottish Students’ Society

During September the Scottish Students’ Society organised an event in Perth on the Initial Professional Development Scheme. The event was attended by 54 students from across the public sector. The executive committee were very pleased that attendees came from all over Scotland and it is hoped that this will continue. Another positive aspect was the number of distance learners who attended the event and it is hoped that future events will continue to attract these students as a way for the Students Society to provide an additional support network.

The feedback from the event was very positive with a number of students commenting that they would be keen to attend future events.

The next event is currently being organised by the Student Society and is on Joint Working across the public sector. It will be held in January 2009 in Glasgow. Further details of this event will be available soon. The Scottish Students Society can be contacted at scottishstudents@cipfa.org

Ethics & You
Tuesday 6 November, 5.30pm, Quarry House, Leeds

Roger Tabor (former CIPFA President), who chaired the ethics working group last year, will be the speaker at this event. Roger will be highlighting ethical issues which may arise in the workplace - and advising students of their responsibilities and potential courses of action.

Ethics is increasingly appearing in several CIPFA exams, and often features in the case study, so this event will prove to be invaluable to students sitting exams in the near future. It will also be useful to members wanting to refresh their knowledge of the subject.

Please email karl.steenson@leeds.gov.uk to reserve a place.

Student diary- Tara Baker

Exam results have been and gone and despite convincing myself I had failed both SBM and the case study, I happily passed them both. There were of course the usual dramas of the CIPFA website crashing during the day due to technical difficulties and then not being able to access the results or the forum at midnight adding to the results day dramas. When I finally did get my results (at 5.00 am) it was primarily a relief. I can now look forward to a Christmas without exams and am eagerly anticipating spending my annual leave on activities of choice rather than chained to a desk….I will appreciate it all the more so thank-you CIPFA! And for all those who still have exams to sit, do not worry, your time will come!
