Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy

CIPFA Panels

A fundamental review of Institute Governance which began in the autumn of 2001, under the chairmanship of past-President Chris Hurford, led to a restructuring of the Institute's decision-making processes; the new structure was put in place during the summer of 2002 and rolled out to Panels over the next year.

The role of the Institute Council was redefined and sharpened such that the majority of each meeting is now devoted to strategic debates on issues affecting the world of public sector financial management, the accountancy profession and the direction of the Institute itself. Council has a structure of Boards and Committees reporting directly to it, and their role is to oversee and manage the achievement of their delegated responsibilities.

Two of these, the Members & Students Development Board and the Public Finance & Management Board, have between them a total of thirty-two panels which are the 'engine-room' for the implementation of policy and the provision of services to members and the accountancy profession. CIPFA takes great pride in the fact that the membership of these panels, together with the networks and forums, is largely drawn from its Members, to a lesser degree from its student roll, and also from those who are not Institute members.

This is not a CIPFA Panel, but a standing committee of CIPFA and LASAAC for the purpose of preparing, maintaining, developing and issuing the Code of Practice on Local Authority Accounting for the United Kingdom, the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) for the sector.
