CIPFA's policy and technical work involves:
- monitoring, analysing and commenting upon current policy issues affecting accounting, auditing
and financial management across the public services and responding to
discussion papers and consultation documents issued by government, regulatory
and other bodies
- contributing to
the work of the wider accountancy profession both here in the UK and
internationally on professional, ie ethical and technical, issues and
to the development of accounting and auditing standards through input
to the work of the independent Accounting Standards Board and Auditing
Practices Board
- maintaining links
with the academic research community and other professional groups
- developing professional,
ie ethical and technical, standards for CIPFA members and managing CIPFA's
schemes of professional regulation, including its scheme of regulation
of auditors of grant maintained schools, and investigating complaints
against CIPFA members under CIPFA's disciplinary scheme
- developing technical
guidance, advice and support for CIPFA members and their employing organisations,
in the form of publications, technical bulletins and newsletters
- responding to CIPFA members' enquiries on technical and ethical issues and offering advice and information through the Technical Enquiry Service.

The Statistical Information Service
The Statistical Information Service (SIS) was established as a partnership between individual authorities and CIPFA. SIS has been undertaking detailed annual surveys of local authority operations for more than a century, and the "CIPFA Statistics" still remain the only impartial and comprehensive account of the extent and achievements of each individual Council. The SIS publish information on the various finance and related non-financial data within local authorities which provide a valuable resource to review performance and achievement through internal analysis and comparison with others over time.
The IPF website provides information for free general access that includes commentaries highlighting important figures, trends and summary tables. For subscribers to the SIS internet service, it is possible to download the surveys in a spreadsheet format to enable data manipulation or access online profiles that offer a quick and easy-to-use facility for interrogating the SIS databases. Publications are also available in hard copy format and on CD Rom on a subscription or individual basis.

Benchmarking
IPF Benchmarking provides an authoritative benchmarking service for local authority finance managers.

CIPFA euro Forum
The CIPFA euro Forum is a subscription-based service providing advice
to local authorities in the United Kingdom on dealing with the new European
single currency, the euro, which was introduced on 1 January 1999. This
site offers useful links to other sites that offer practical information
on the euro. Subscribers can download a range of documents designed to
help members with this important subject.

TISonline subscription services provide financial managers and others with an interest in the financial management of the public services with comprehensive coverage of the historical background, regulatory framework, and practicalities of implementation behind the delivery of public services.
