Hedley Marshall Award Winner 2008
Paul Treadaway of CIPFA South East Region was the 2008 winner of the Dr Hedley Marshall Award. He was presented with the award by CIPFA President, Caroline Mawhood, at the Conference for the Regions in September.
The award has been given annually to an Institute member or registered student who has given outstanding service to CIPFA regional activities.
Paul, who was Chair of his region in 2004/2005 and the organiser of the highly successful 2005 Conference for the Regions in London was honoured for a unique record of regional activities in the South East spanning some three and a half decades.
The President outlined some of Paul's many achievements during this period in her presentation speech. These included Paul's work for the CSE Students' Society, his success in reinvigorating the Region during his Chairmanship and his longstanding work in championing strong reciprocal relationships between his 'two accountancy bodies, CIPFA and AAT'.
She also highlighted the personal qualities which enabled Paul to make such significant contributions:
'Paul embodies the best of CIPFA volunteering; wholly committed to CIPFA/AAT While still retaining the human touch, so that he can strike up and develop personal relationships that others can identify with him and what he stands for. Whatever he undertakes, he does with passion and grace'
Paul delivered a moving acceptance speech in which he expressed both his surprise at being nominated for the award and the deep sense of honour he felt in joining the ranks of previous award winners.
He talked about his motivation for volunteering - the enjoyment he derived from helping other members and students and being in the company of other volunteers: 'CIPFA is a great organisation and is supported by a superb volunteer workforce. This is almost unique among most other accountancy and indeed, professional bodies'.
Paul went on to talk about how privileged he felt to have had the opportunity to help build the relationship between CIPFA and the AAT.
Most volunteers know that the CIPFA family extends beyond members alone. Paul publicly acknowledged this by paying tribute to his wife, Geraldine, for all the support which she had provided to the work he had carried out over 30 years as a volunteer.
Everyone agreed that Paul was an extremely worthy winner of the award.
About the award
The Dr Hedley Marshall CBE Memorial Award is given annually to an Institute member or registered student who has given outstanding service to CIPFA regional activities. The award is sponsored by CIPFA in the Midlands in recognition of Dr Marshall's distinguished career in Coventry, and of the respect in which he is held not only in the region, but also throughout the Institute nationally.
Any member or student who has given service to CIPFA regional activities is eligible for the award and CIPFA's 12 regions, branches and societies are invited to make nominations between February and May of each year. Nominations are judged by the President, Vice-President, Chair of CIPFA's Board for the Regions and the Chief Executive. The Institute President presents the award to the winner at the annual Conference for the Regions.
Hedley Marshall was the Institute President in 1953. He was City Treasurer of Coventry from 1944 until 1964 which, of course, was such an important period for the redevelopment of Coventry following the devastation of the war.
