Sixth Form Management Games

A winning team 2011The Sixth Form management games provide a stimulating and fun environment for 6th Form students to sample the scope, complexity and impact of financial management in the public sector.

The 2011 games were held during June and July at various venues across the Midlands. The teams again impressed with their enthusiasm, hard work and ideas. This page gives brief reports, some pictures and who to contact to take part in the future!

Reports on the 2011 Games

The first of the games held on 22 June was at DMU in Leicester. It was contested by four teams, from Southfield School (Kettering), President Kennedy (Coventry), City of Leicester and the Kenilworth School and Sports College.

In a very close finish, first place was taken by Kenilworth and second place by Southfield. There was a great "buzz" throughout the day, with some excellent team and individual performances and responses to a variety of challenging tasks.

The second game on 22 June was hosted by Staffordshire University in Stoke. The team from Westwood College came first and Abbot Beyne were second.

The next game was held at Nottingham Trent University on 29th June. The winners were the Colonel Frank Seely School, with North Hykeham Joint Sixth Form taking the runners up spot.

The game on 13th July at the Tally Ho Police Training Centre, Edgbaston, Birmingham was a very close run affair - just three points separated the three teams. The Cardinal Newman (Coventry) team was first in line, closely pursued by King Edward VI (Lichfield) and Coundon Court (Coventry).

The second game on 13th July was at the University of Worcester and was won by the team from Kingsley College.

So what qualities did the teams display and what could they work on in the future?

Throughout the games, the teams displayed many good qualities - including working very hard; responding positively to tough questions from the various panels; putting forward good proposals and innovative alternatives; and displaying good examples of team work, leadership and individual working.

Areas upon which team members could focus were also identified - being sure to introduce yourself; ensuring that all team members appearing before a panel have a clear role; taking control of meetings when in a position of authority; keeping a level head when faced with an agitated union official or probing journalist; speaking clearly and concisely under pressure; and writing clearly, using generally accepted business formats when writing letters and reports.

Further Details and How to Take Part

Organiser Chris Gill says: 'We have steadily increased the numbers of students involved, whilst trying to maintain the quality of experience and learning. Schools are given some background information before the event. Then, when they arrive on the day, each school forms a management team, with each student taking on the role of a member of that team.

We provide them with information relevant to their portfolio and then set the management team with a task - for this series they have been asked to produce a draft report by lunchtime.

As life is not always straightforward, we throw in a few interruptions and each team has to decide how it handles these while completing the main task. After lunch the teams receive a bombshell and have to revise their plans, with further interruptions to add that extra sense of reality. Finally, they deliver a presentation on their deliberations to a board of governors. The teams usually beaver away with great enthusiasm.'

If you are associated with a Midlands School or College with post-16 provision, which may be interested in taking part in future games, then please encourage them to contact Chris Gill (chris.gill@tesco.net). Please also read the 2011 Leaflet for further background details.
