Sixth Form Management Game - Staffordshire

On 12th July 2006 at Staffordshire University, the teams for the CIPFA Sixth Form Management Game represented the Barr Beacon Language College, Cheslyn Hay High School, Thomas Alleyne's High School, Abbot Beyne School, and The Thomas Adams School.

The overall first prize was awarded to the Thomas Adams School from Wem.

The teams were required to work through a scenario about the challenges and decisions facing the senior officers and elected councillors of a local council. They had to consider conflicting priorities, make recommendations, respond to urgent work and interviews, and meet deadlines.  Each player took the role of a particular Chief Officer for the day.

Sixth Form GroupThe objectives of the day were to demonstrate the challenges of managing under time pressure with uncertain outcomes, to develop team and individual skills, to gain an insight in to the issues facing public sector organisations - and to have fun!

An interview

There was a buzz of activity throughout the day, and a number of positive comments at the end, with a clear demand for more of these games to be held.

Winning Team

To add a competitive and reward element, teams were assessed throughout the game. There was a prize for the top performer in each team, and individual and school prizes for the winning teams. The final result was very close, with the overall first prize awarded to The Thomas Adams School from Wem. (pictured)

InterviewThe event was organised by Chris Gill and Western Area colleagues, with help on the day from CIPFA members and students from across the Midlands. All the volunteers had a great time too, and were kept very busy as the day progressed.
