Rebuilding morale: the big leap forward

As the Public Sector responds to the Government’s ongoing austerity measures which will see budget reduced by unprecedented amounts, we ask how organisations can rebuild, transform and most importantly improve morale.   The sector as whole needs to deliver more outcomes with less, a considerable leap, given the bleak fiscal and economic back drop.   In the face of job losses, strikes and cuts in remuneration, how can individual public sector workers be inspired, motivated an invest in their careers?   This seminar explores the how to rebuild morale and make the next leap.

Delivering the Spending Review

The Government has set out plans to reduce public sector spending nationally by £81 billion by 2014-15, which will have a substantial impact on public services in London as well as on Whitehall Departments and agencies. The Coalition Government’s first 150 days and the next three years.
 

The Coalition Government's first 150 days has been characterised by a spate of activity.  The emergency budget came and went with a £6.2 billion cut in public expenditure in the current year.  The comprehensive spending review planned for 20th October is eagerly awaited.  As the public sector braces itself are another round of cuts, this seminar provides an opportunity to consider the rocky road ahead.

Who Will Fund the Future?

The Government supported UK banks in 2008 to prevent the collapse of the economy.  It invested in and effectively nationalised a number of them, which are now managed by UK Financial Investments (UKFI) for the Government.  The seminar considered strategies for the nationalised banks, their relationship with UKFI and the implications for London’s economy and public services.

Public Sector Funding Crisis

This seminar continued the theme of previous CIPFA London Division events and was intended to provide support to Accountants in addressing the substantial hole in public finances. Public bodies need to explore radical new ways of funding public services. After the General Election there will be even greater pressure to deliver “more and better for significantly less”. This seminar focused on the funding issues public sector organisations are currently facing. Speakers set out the current problem and looked at potential ways of fixing it. The CIPFA London Division AGM was held immediately before the seminar.

Driving Business Transformation

With a potential £90 billion hole in the public finances, public bodies need to explore radical new ways of delivering services, sharing assets and reducing costs. After the next general election there will be even greater pressure to deliver, “more and better, for significantly less”. Business transformation is an imperative not an option - new structures, new ways of working and greater use of technology must all be exploited and harnessed. This seminar considered ways of driving and implementing radical business transformation.

The event was held at the historic George Inn pub at London Bridge and included a buffet supper.

Paul Kidd acted as the ‘conductor’ for the evening and tested people’s knowledge of popular music.

Financial Management in a Recession

With the current liquidity crisis afflicting the global banking system, funding in a recession is a very real issue for public bodies. This seminar focused on the implications for treasury management in the public sector; what the fall out has been from the Icelandic banking crisis and finally how we fund PFI projects in a recessionary environment.

The Credit Crunch and its effect on London's public services

The Credit Crunch started in 2007 and is developing into a world recession, with extensive implications for all of us.  This seminar looked at what has happened and what the future holds; it focused on the effect of the Credit Crunch on London’s public services and what to do about it; and illustrated the affordable housing response in detail. London Division Autumn Seminar: London Olympics 2012

This seminar focussed on the financing of the London Olympics 2012 as well as the potential legacy it will leave behind.

As Chief Executive of the London Borough of Hackney and Chair of the 5 Olympic Borough Partnership Tim talked about the significance of London 2012 to regenerating East London.

Karl spoke about the vision for the legacy of the Olympic Games post 2012.

The event was held at the George Inn pub at London Bridge and included a buffet supper.
Paul Kidd acted as the quizmaster for the evening and taxed people’s general knowledge on a range of topics including literature, sport and music.
