Retired Members
Welcome to retirement! Do you know that there is a Retired Members’ Section in this Region which provides the opportunity for retired members to get together from time to time socially?
All the 260 or so retired members currently living in the Yorkshire and the Humber Region are automatically members of the Section but there are two categories of membership – active being those who wish to be involved and are notified of events and activities, and inactive who do not wish to be involved and are not included on the mailing list. Currently there are 47 active members.
We aim to hold at least two events, which are generally self financing, a year - the Annual Meeting in the winter, the other in the summer being a visit to somewhere interesting when members’ partners are most welcome to attend. The Chair of the Section is John Butler, who is also a member of the Regional Executive. If you wish to become an active member please contact John on telephone 01482 870312 or email john@the-butlers.co.uk

The inaugural meeting of the Yorkshire and the Humber Retired Members’ Section was held on 3 April 2009 at Leeds City Museum where 12 enthusiastic retired members were joined by Regional Chair, Sarah Howard, and CIPFA President, Caroline Mawhood. Caroline gave an excellent address on the current financial situation and how it was affecting CIPFA and its members. John Butler, CIPFA President in 2007/08, was elected the first Chair of the Section. The meeting concluded with a buffet lunch kindly provided by the Regional Executive at which those present took full advantage of the opportunity to catch up with former colleagues and meet new ones.
The 2011 annual meeting, which was held on 19 September at the aptly named Treasurer's House (a National Trust property in York), was attended by 13 members and guests. John Butler was re-elected Chair of the Section. The principal guest was CIPFA President Chris Bilsland who gave a most interesting presentation on current developments in the public sector and their impact on the Institute. After an excellent lunch a number of members enjoyed exploring the House.
The 2010 CIPFA Conference was held from 8 to 10 June at Harrogate, which is of course in the heart of the Region. As a special concession CIPFA agreed that members of the Retired Members’ Section could attend for free which at least 8 members took advantage of.
The summer outing was to the Yorkshire Air Museum (recognised as one of the leading museums of its kind in Europe as well as being the largest original wartime Bomber Command Station open to the public) at Elvington near York on 9 July 2010 where 14 members and their guests had a most enjoyable day which included lunch in the NAAFI restaurant.
The Region’s Professional Development Day took place on 4 November 2010 in Leeds which was attended by 3 members of the Section. The programme included CIPFA Past President Roger Latham presenting certificates to newly elected members of the Institute and to the regional prize winners. The Yorkshire and the Humber’s Annual Dinner on 26 November 2010 at the Metropole Hotel in Leeds commemorated the 125th anniversary of the Institute included 16 members of the Section and their guests. CIPFA Invigilation Panels
For many years CIPFA relied upon retired members panels organised by Dick Coppard and Arthur Boulter to assist with invigilating at the CIPFA mock and real exams at various centres throughout the UK. Since January 2011 all invigilation arrangements have been made by CETC and potential invigilators should contact Liz Curran at liz.curran@cipfa.org.uk
