Kevin Coyle
Tom Sowerby Award Winner 2008

Kevin is the Financial Services Manager at North Lincolnshire Council.

Kevin has worked as an Examiner for CIPFA over many years and is well known and respected for both his contribution in this role and for his encouragement and mentoring to aspiring accountants.

Kevin consistently flies the CIPFA flag ensuring its progress is publicised in North Lincolnshire Council’s internal communication which helps services understand and be aware of the pressure points students may be under as they progress through different stages of the qualification.

People like Kevin are the lifeblood of professional organisations. Not only do they hold down demanding day jobs in the public services but also dedicate large parts of their private time to the support and betterment of others.

Kevin’s friendly manner, unique sense of humour and continuous commitment to CIPFA students, past and present make him invaluable.


Martyn Buckley
Tom Sowerby Award Winner 2007

Martyn is the Accounting & Projects Manager at Scottish Borders Council and has served as a CIPFA P3 project examiner for approx. 20 years, 18 as either the national coordinator for Scotland or Edinburgh coordinator.  Martyn has also served as a Professional Adviser and has promoted CIPFA to current/prospective students over a considerable period. All this work is voluntary.

He always made himself available to talk to students, individually or as a group and his presentations on exam techniques has greatly assisted students in presenting themselves for examination.  It is always encouraging for students to meet and learn from examiners removing some fear of the unknown. Martyn has presented a clear structure of how to pass the project using practical examples of “dos and don’ts”.  Preparation is key, and his advice which has been invaluable, has helped numerous students pass this final hurdle.

It is not long service alone which makes a Tom Sowerby Award winner special; Martyn’s commitment to CIPFA students has been consistent and energetic.


David Gardner

David Gardner

David’s career is one of outstanding commitment to CIPFA. Since qualifying in 1974, he has taught thousands of CIPFA students and been heavily involved in the development of course delivery. David has worked in a variety of roles including a ten year stint as programme leader. Formerly director of the accounting finance and economics school at Liverpool John Moores University, where he made a significant contribution to establishing it as one of the leading providers of the CIPFA Professional Qualification.

David’s innovation and hard work has shaped CIPFA training. During a short period as course director, he helped to establish the CIPFA Education and Training Centre (CETC). Besides acting as a representative on various CIPFA education and training committees, David served longer than any other chairman for the Association of CIPFA Lecturers (ACIPFAL). Tirelessly working to develop its relationship with CIPFA, David helped to give ACIPFAL a position of real influence.

David is consistently dedicated to students, both on a one to one basis and within the national CIPFA community.


Anne Bryce

Anne Bryce

Anne has a long history of dedication, innovation and commitment to CIPFA student activities and has undertaken a great deal of this work in a completely voluntary capacity whilst working as an Internal Auditor in the NHS in Scotland. She has been a member of the Scottish Students’ Society for over 17 years in various capacities.

Anne has taken a pivotal role in the organisation of many events for students including Introductory Courses, Lecture Programmes on Audit Topics, Weekend Schools etc. and has represented the Students’ Society at a number of Conference for the Regions and on the CIPFA in Scotland Executive Committee.

Anne’s commitment to CIPFA student training has been consistent, energetic and sustained and has helped the Scottish Students’ Society become the leading and most established students’ society in the UK.

Anne is approachable and friendly and has been a positive role model for students during her time on the Students’ Society Committee. Anne is also a great role model for future CIPFA volunteers.
