Ameena Banday

My name is Ameena Banday and I am a trainee at Leeds City Council.

My first encounter with the NSF was at the Coventry conference in 2005. I was encouraged to attend by my employer but had no idea of what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the conference was. It was a well organised event with a great selection of speakers and a fantastic opportunity to meet fellow trainees from all over the UK. I was particularly impressed by the enthusiasm of the NSF volunteers who had organised the event. I became a member of the NSF the following year at the York conference.

If you wish to contact me please email ameena.banday@leeds.gov.uk

Jane Cika

My name is Jane Cika and I have worked for the London Borough of Waltham Forest since December 2006 as at Graduate Trainee Accountant.

I am currently studying the Diploma Stage at CETC South East. I attended the NSF conference in July 2007, I was very impressed by what the NSF does and joined the NSF in September 2007.

If you wish to contact me please email jane.Cika@walthamforest.gov.uk

Jonathan Causton

I started my finance career when I completed my Financial Services degree at Nottingham Trent University.  As part of my degree I completed a one year industrial placement at Investment bank, JP Morgan, where I managed brokerage trading accounts for the bond markets in London and New York.  When I graduated I started at Leicester City Council on their CIPFA Graduate Training programme which involved working in various teams which included corporate accountancy, Internal Audit, departmental finance teams, corporate investigations and working in project teams conducting various reviews.  I now work at the National College for School Leadership in Nottingham as a management accountant where I support the college’s budgets.

My CIPFA voluntary work started in 2004 when I created the CIPFA in the Midlands (CIM) Student Society and became its first chair.  I’ve organised numerous student events in the midlands and I’ve spoken at these events on a wide spectrum of subjects.  During my time as the Society’s Chair I sat on the CIPFA in the Midlands Regional Council. In 2005 I joined the CIPFA National Student Forum (NSF) and was elected as the Vice Chair in June 2006.  During my time as vice chair I sat on CIPFA’s Board for the Regions.  At the end of the 2007 NSF Conference in Reading I took over as the NSF Chair and I currently sit on the Members and Students Development Board.

The year ahead will see significant changes for CIPFA students especially with the implementation of the blended learning scheme.  If you wish to contact me please email nsf@cipfa.org.

A career changer (plan A was to be a university lecturer in contemporary French lit, and I briefly taught at Edinburgh University, as well as spending two years teaching English to uni students in France) I moved from the world of education into that of finance four days after my thirty second birthday in February 2006. As one of the chosen ones on the London boroughs’ Finance The Future scheme I became a trainee accountant with Lambeth, a large inner-city borough with a diverse range of residents and challenges to match. Starting in corporate services, I then moved into environment and cultural services – the “cradle to grave” department – where I also got my first exposure to capital accounting. I am currently in a substantive post in children’s and young people’s services, covering maternity leave, and acting as management accountant for a unit dealing with a mix of capital, revenue and PFI – life is never dull ...

Sean Cosgrove

I came from a completely non-financial background (language teaching and journalism) to join the London Borough of Lambeth in February 2006 as a Graduate Trainee Accountant via the London Boroughs' "Finance the Future" scheme. I have just taken my Final exams.

I joined the NSF after a presentation by the then president at CETC South East when I started studying there. I was attracted by the possibility of contributing something - CIPFA's a much smaller community than, say, the ACCA, which seems to mean people care more - and, at the same time, of the chance to network with my potential future colleagues and employers. I suspect my membership also helps protect me from "London-centricity"!

Rachel Edden

I am the academic staff contact within the NSF and provide the link between the NSF and the Association of CIPFA Lecturers (ACIPFAL). I have been in this position for a year now, having joined the lecturing staff at Nottingham Trent University in 2004. I currently teach on Financial and Performance Reporting, Public Finance and Audit and Assurance at CIPFA Diploma level and also on the Finance and Management Case Study at the FTPC level. I also teach on a range of other Postgraduate and Undergraduate programmes at the University. I came into academia having previously worked at KPMG for seven years. I was an Audit Manager working in the Public Sector practice and working on a range of clients predominately within the education sector. I am also an active member of the CIPFA in the Midlands (CIM) Regional Council where I aim to represent provider and student views as far as possible.

If you wish to contact me please email rachel.edden@ntu.ac.uk

Nick Harvey

Nick HarveyI have recently passed my finals and moved jobs from Herefordshire Council, where I worked as a Graduate Trainee to my first "proper" job: Treasury Accountant at Worcestershire County Council. I first heard about the NSF's work when I attended the 2005 NSF conference, I also volunteered for my Regional Student Society around that time, Chairing it for 2006/07, I joined the NSF once I stepped down, but remain in contact with the Midlands Student Society to this day.

Both Herefordshire and my current employer were/are genuinely supportive to both my studies and volunteering for the institute, I am acutely aware however that not all students are so fortunate. I feel that it's important to communicate to students the benefits that volunteering yields for them personally and professionally; and communicate to employers the extra value this adds to their student's training and it's importance in maintaining the wellbeing of the institute. To this end, I am the NSF representative on Board For The Regions, because regional societies are often the best first port-of-call for would-be volunteers.

If any students are interested in how I can assist them; or indeed if any employers want to know more about what we can do for their trainees, then please drop me a line: nharvey@worcestershire.gov.uk

Suzanne MacDonald

Hi, my name is Suzanne MacDonald and I represent the Scottish region on the NSF. I'm currently at the final stage of the CIPFA qualification and hope to have it all finished by December 2006. I work for Aberdeenshire Council as an accountant in the Policy and Resources team,

I've been a member of the NSF since October 2003 and have loved every single minute of it! We've got a great team and everyone works really hard to make sure students get a voice. Being part of the NSF has given me so much both personally and professionally.

Feel free to contact me at suzanne.macdonald@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

Richard Martin

I work for Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust as a Technical Accountant. I studied CIPFA at New College, Durham and recently sat the FTPC.

I formally chaired the CIPFA in the North-East Students' Society and joined the NSF to represent students in the North-East region. I am privileged to be an NSF member and enthused about contributing to CIPFA on behalf of my fellow students.

Please feel free to contact me: richard.martin@ntw.nhs.uk

Chris Roach

I joined the NSF in January 2006 after seeing an advert looking for volunteers from the South West. I am based in Bristol and have been working for Grant Thornton in public sector audit since January 2005.

I have been studying at CETC South-West, and am currently working through the final stages of the CIPFA qualification. I am lucky in that my employer provides a lot of support for my time at college but by serving as vice-chair with the NSF, I want to try to make sure that all CIPFA students have their issues represented. Please feel free to drop me an email - chris.roach@gtuk.com

Judith Savage, Chair, NSF

Hi, my name is Judith Savage and I am the current Chair of the NSF. I joined the NSF at the annual student conference in July 2006. I have a great deal of passion for the qualification and for student issues, and joining the NSF gave me the opportunity to get more involved with CIPFA in making the experience of being a CIPFA student an excellent one.

I passed my final exams in July 2007, and passed my IPDS in December 2007, so I know how much hard work goes into studying. I studied at both Leeds Met and Liverpool John Moores Universities and took advantage of several revision courses at various CETC centres.

I work as an Accountant at Trafford Council in Manchester in the Children and Young People’s Service. I’m quite active, so in my spare time I try and get to the gym as often as possible and am training for the Manchester to Blackpool bike ride. I’m also trying (unsuccessfully) to grow my own vegetables and become a real eco warrior…and when I’m not doing all that I’m learning Italian!

The NSF are here to represent and help you, so please do contact us with any ideas, suggestions or queries.

If you have any queries (no matter how big or small) please do contact me: Judith.savage@trafford.gov.uk

Karl Steenson

I have been a member of the National Student Forum since May 2005, and am the marketing co-ordinator for the NSF. In addition, I was a member of the ethics working group that updated the Statement of Professional Practice on Ethics (Ethics and You) in 2006.

I am also a member of the North East Students’ Society (Southern Division), having organised or helped to organise a number of social and work or study-related events.

If you have any questions, etc, in relation to the NSF or the North East Region please contact: karl.steenson@sky.com

Simon Walton

My name is Simon Walton and I have worked for Leicester City Council as a Graduate Trainee Accountant since September 2005 following a degree in Medical Engineering at the University of Bradford and an MPhil research degree at Cranfield University (quite a career change!).

I am currently at the end of my studies for the Diploma Stage at Nottingham Trent University and should be beginning studies for my finals (recently taken exam results pending) in September.

Having joined my regional student society (Midlands) early in my certificate stage studies I attended the NSF conference in York in 2006 where I was given an insight into the great work that the NSF does for CIPFA students. I therefore decided to join the NSF in September 2006 to help continue and add to the work that they do and represent the voice of the other students I am in contact with throughout my studies.

Please feel free to express any areas that you think the NSF should be concentrating on to improve CIPFA students’ studying experience or highlight any areas of concern you may have; these will be discussed amongst the forum and action taken where possible.

If you wish to contact me please email simon.walton@leicester.gov.uk

Fraser Wilson

I’m Fraser Wilson and I am a Trainee Accountant at the City of Edinburgh Council. I am currently studying the Diploma level at CETC East Scotland.

I joined the NSF in March 2007, representing the Scottish region, in order to play a part in ensuring that the views and interests of all CIPFA students are adequately represented.

I can be contacted at fraser.wilson@edinburgh.gov.uk.
