Exemptions can be granted on a paper by paper basis, for any combination of subjects, if you can provide evidence that you have studied all the material included in that paper's syllabus to a level equivalent to that required by the CIPFA examiners.
An exemption will not be awarded if you have previously attempted an examination for a subject and have not been successful.

If your qualification is listed, please send in a verified copy (please see guidance notes below) of your qualification certificate and we will confirm which modules you may be exempt from. Once your exemption has been approved you will be able to purchase the appropriate exemption via the Student Learning Centre.
If your existing qualification has not appeared in the drop down list, this has not been assessed by CIPFA before. You will be required to complete the exemption grids linking the relevant elements of your qualification to the CIPFA syllabus when applying for exemptions. Please click on this link, which will take you through to the exemption grids. A verified copy of certificates is required, please see guidance notes below.
A decision will be given by 15 working days from receipt of your application

- Financial & Performance Reporting
- Strategic Business Management
- Finance & Management Case Study

Any academic or professional qualifications under ten years will be considered for exemptions.
CIPFA will also consider those who are part qualified and fully qualified members of the CCAB and IAB for exemptions.
The ten year rule does not apply to fully qualified CCAB’s.
By applying for and accepting an exemption you are accepting responsibility that you may be examined on exempt topics in subsequent stages of the Qualification. CIPFA strongly recommends that students take time to review the Professional Qualification Syllabus and Study Guides for any approved exemptions.

What should I send?
- Verified photocopies of all your educational or professional certificates where you have previously studied a subject similar to one of the Certificate or Diploma modules within CIPFA’s Professional Qualification.
- Please do not send in original certificates as CIPFA cannot give any assurance that these will be returned. CIPFA reserves the right to ask that the original certificate be produced.
- If your certificates are not in English please send in certified translated copies and certified original copies.
What should I do if I no longer have the original certificate?
- You will need to provide a letter from the institution that awarded the qualification verifying the title of the qualification and the date it was awarded to you. The letter should be on headed business paper and marked with the official college university or professional stamp.
- The certificate must be verified by a recognised UK employer. A recognised UK employer would normally be a local authority, another public body or an accountancy firm. CIPFA reserves the right to makes any checks it believes to be necessary. This person must not be related to you.
- Please take along both the original certificate and the photocopy as the person concerned must have seen the original certificate.
- The person certifying the qualification must write on the photocopy, in English and in BLOCK CAPITALS, the words:
'I CONFIRM THAT THIS IS A TRUE COPY OF THE ORIGINAL'
- They must print their name in BLOCK CAPITALS and sign and date the copy immediately next to their statement 'I CONFIRM THAT THIS IS A TRUE COPY OF THE ORIGINAL'. Both the printed name, signature and date must be in English.
- The photocopy must be marked with the official company or college, university stamp.
Students studying overseas
- For students studying overseas, the person verifying the certificate must be their employer. Translated copies of certificates should follow the process above, but the translated copy should be marked: 'I CONFIRM THAT THIS IS AN ACCURATE TRANSLATION OF THE ORIGINAL'
