Since I took on a volunteer role the personal rewards have been enormous. I have learnt a valuable new skill and been welcomed by regional council members.

Colin Hague - (Chair of TIS Human Resources editorial board)

Colin HagueI am the head of human resources at the Borough of Poole, a unitary council with over 5,000 employees. I have over 30 years HR management experience and I am a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

I was approached by the chair of the TIS Human Resources editorial board some 5 years ago and asked if I would support the group.

This has been a really enjoyable experience. Writing employment law articles helps ensure I keep my own professional knowledge up to date and networking opportunities have emerged from this work. The group works as a very effective team and we are delighted with the outcome of our contribution.

The Borough of Poole recognises the importance of supporting this work and the time investment has been incidental and not difficult to reconcile with my other commitments. I can recommend the experience of volunteering to others.

In my leisure time I participate in masters athletics and have felt proud to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland in international masters athletics events.
