Since I took on a volunteer role the personal rewards have been enormous. I have learnt a valuable new skill and been welcomed by regional council members.

Richard MartinOriginally from Bradford, I moved up to the North-East in 1998 to attend Durham University. I obtained MEng and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering but opted for a career change in 2005, gaining a place on the NHS Financial Management Training Scheme and commencing studies with CIPFA at New College, Durham. I am now at the FTPC stage, and have a substantive post as a Technical Accountant at Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust.

My involvement as a CIPFA volunteer began with the North-East Students' Society (former Northern Division), which I joined at the start of my studies and chaired from early 2007 until the end of June 2008. I am currently on the National Student Forum.
